Diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorder in Children

Welcome

We understand that an autism diagnosis can lead to complex feelings, questions, and a deep desire for the best future for your child. Autism cannot be detected through any medical tests, so psychologists and doctors will observe your child's behavior and their progress in reaching certain developmental milestones in order to determine a diagnosis. They will assess communication and social challenges and interview parents about restricted interests or maladaptive behaviors, among other diagnostic criteria. From there, your child will receive a diagnosis of ASD 1, 2, or 3, which indicate how much support they will need moving forward.

While we specialize in support services post-diagnosis through ABA therapy, we are also here to guide families in Illinois through the initial step of obtaining an accurate Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis. Our dedication to your child’s well-being extends beyond therapy; it begins the moment you start seeking answers.

FAQ

Who is certified to conduct an autism diagnosis?

There is a difference between a diagnosis of autism provided by a school district and a medical autism diagnosis. Insurance will only cover ABA therapy if the diagnosis is provided by a medical provider and if the medical provider conducts formalized assessments. Therefore, we recommend seeking out a clinical psychologist, child psychiatrist, or neurologist who specializes in autism evaluations.

What is involved in the autism diagnostic process?

The autism diagnostic process typically involves developmental screenings, behavioral observations, and parent interviews to determine whether your child meets the criteria for an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis.

What should I bring to a pre-diagnostic consultation?

During your visit, bring any medical records, observation notes about your child’s behavior, a list of behaviors or milestones you’re concerned about, and any previous assessments or reports. This information helps specialists understand your child’s needs and developmental history.

What tests are done to diagnose autism?

To diagnose autism, specialists conduct a combination of observational assessments, such as the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS), and structured interviews with parents, like the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R). Although the ADOS and ADI-R are common assessment tools, diagnosticians may use a variety of different tests to evaluate for autism.

When should I screen my child for autism?

It's recommended to screen your child for autism as early as possible if developmental delays are observed or if there are concerns about their social communication, behavioral, or language development. Official guidelines suggest screening at 18 and 24 months during routine pediatric visits.
