There is a difference between a diagnosis of autism provided by a school district and a medical autism diagnosis. Insurance will only cover ABA therapy if the diagnosis is provided by a medical provider and if the medical provider conducts formalized assessments. Therefore, we recommend seeking out a clinical psychologist, child psychiatrist, or neurologist who specializes in autism evaluations.
The autism diagnostic process typically involves developmental screenings, behavioral observations, and parent interviews to determine whether your child meets the criteria for an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis.
During your visit, bring any medical records, observation notes about your child’s behavior, a list of behaviors or milestones you’re concerned about, and any previous assessments or reports. This information helps specialists understand your child’s needs and developmental history.
